Currumbin Rock

This is an image I’ve had in my mind for a long time, a scene that goes from glowing sunset to night, from faint stars to complete, lengthy star trails. I just needed the perfect location to make it a reality. There were also quite a few technical hurdles to overcome, how to capture the complete 24-hour trail around the southern celestial pole for instance.

I scouted and took test images at many locations, but none quite had the look I wanted for this image, until I discovered Currumbin Rock. The setting was perfect, a picturesque flat and open foreground with an uninterrupted view of the sky, and the rock itself is positioned incredibly well; it looks stunning when imaged towards the south so that it sits nicely under the Celestial Pole.

Whilst this was one of my more complex projects to create, it is also one of my favourites, a challenging shoot from start to finish with a result that far exceeded what I hoped to create.
