Eclipsorama - Red

In this image I wanted to emphasize the rich red colour of the Eclipsed Moon in another way: a long exposure ‘Trail’ capturing the Eclipse in motion. One aspect of star trails imagery that I love is the ability to capture and highlight the beautiful variety of colours of the stars themselves. So, for this image I captured a 5 hour long ‘Moon-Trail’ of the eclipse changing from the very bright Full Moon, through to the captivating orange-red Eclipse. It was a challenging sequence to capture and process into a moon trail, as the Moon’s brightness changes so enormously from Full Moon to Total Eclipse.

The foreground was captured at Currumbin Rock, just after sunset. The red glow on the sand is caused by lighting at the Swell Sculpture Festival on the nearby beach, which complemented the red Total Eclipse nicely.

The star trails in this image are just over 3-hours long. I kept them shorter than the 5-hour capture of the Moon as they suit the foreground quite well at this length, and don’t compete with the striking Moon Trail.
